1. What should I expect during my first massage therapy session?
- The therapist will arrive early to review the medical history form which is required of you to determine any considerations or contraindications of massage therapy. Also, the therapist will ask questions to find out your reason for needing or wanting massage and any problem areas that may need to be worked on.
2. Where will the massage session take place?
- All sessions except chair massage are done in the comfort and security of your own home. Please attempt to schedule your massage when your home will be realitively quiet in order to get the most out of your session. Chair massages may take place at a business, office or other function.
3. What do I wear during the massage?
- For a full body massage, most people undress completely or wear only their underwear. You will be given complete privacy to undress and will be fully covered at all times with a sheet or blanket except for the area being worked on. For chair massage, clients stay fully clothed.
4. What should I do during the massage?
- It is your massage and you should be comfortable, whether you want to talk or close your eyes in silence. If the therapist wants you to adjust your position, she will either move you or or ask you to adjust as needed. You should feel free to ask questions at any time or ask the therapist to stop if needed. You will not offend the therapist by asking them to change pressure or avoid working on an area.
5. How will a massage feel?
- It will depend on the type of massage used and the reason for massage. Most massage should feel relaxing and comfortable, but if there is a specific tense area bieing worked on, it may be slightly uncomfortable but should never be painful. Do not hesitate to let the therapist know how you feel so that she can alter her technique, pressure or approach.
6. Is massage always appropriate?
- No. There are some conditions that make massage inappropriate. This is why it is extremely important for you to fill out the medical history form fully and completely and keep it updated. If you are under a physician's care, it is strongly recommended that you get the physician's approval.
7. How will I feel after the massage?
- Most people feel very relaxed. Some people often experience decreased pain, increased energy, decreased stress, increased circulation, increased range of motion or improved posture. To ensure proper hydration after a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage unless you ar eon a water restriciton from your physician.
8. Will I have a choice of oils or lotions used?
- Most therapists choose hypo-allergenic oils or lotions that they are comfortable working with. Please let the therapist know if you are allergic or sensitive to any items in most oils or lotions.
9. Do I need to provide anything?
- No, the therapist will bring everything needed for the session. If you have a CD Player for the therapist to use or calming music you would like to use, just let the therapist know. Also, some clients choose to use their own sheets for their comfort. If you choose to do this, it is recommended that you use old sheets that are only used for massage, as oil stains can happen. Just let the therapist know if you want to use your own sheets or other products.
10. Am I supposed to tip my massage therapist?
- Gratuity is always welcome but not required. You can also feel free to refer friends, family and co-workers to the massage therapist.
